Section 2: Certification and Progression

Does the RYA Powerboat Level 2 course count as a licence to drive a boat?

This is one of the most PB2 FAQs that we receive at NXT Marine. Contrary to popular opinion, the RYA PB2 course does not count as a licence to drive a boat, as there is no compulsory licence for leisure boaters in the UK. However, the certificate is internationally recognised and allows you to apply for the International Certificate of Competence (ICC) for vessels up to 10 metres, which is mandatory in many European and Mediterranean cruising areas. Therefore, this course is a fundamental step toward legally driving a boat abroad.

Is there a test or an exam at the end of the course?

No, there is no formal written test or final exam at the end of the course. Instead, the course involves continuous assessment over the two days in which our RYA instructor guides you through all the practical exercises and theoretical knowledge.

How Are You Assessed at the end of the PB2 course?

While there is no formal exam or test, you will be assessed based on your ability to demonstrate the required skills and knowledge throughout the course. The assessment will cover practical skills, including boat handling, high-speed manoeuvres, docking, man-overboard recovery, turning in tight spaces, and general boat control. It also includes theoretical knowledge on a variety of topics, including basic navigation, buoyage, safety procedures, tides, rules of the road (COLREGs), and weather considerations.

How do I progress after passing the PB2 course?

There are several options upon passing the course. You can choose to do an RYA Safety Boat course, which is often required by sailing clubs. You can also do the Intermediate Powerboat certificate to further your skills.

Does the RYA PB2 give you international accreditation?

The course does not automatically give you international accreditation. However, this certification qualifies you to apply for the International Certificate of Competence (ICC) for power vessels of up to 10 metres. If you have a CEVNI certificate and do this course for inland certification, you can apply for an inland ICC for powered vessels of up to 10 metres.
