What to Expect on Your RYA Powerboat Level 2 Course
If you’re booking your RYA Powerboat Level 2 with NXT Marine, you probably have a few questions.
Is there an exam? Can you fail? What actually happens on the day?
Firstly, there’s no written exam and no surprise test at the end. The course is built around continuous coaching and practical assessment. You learn a skill, you practise it, and once you can demonstrate it safely and confidently, we move forward.
The focus is competence, not catching you out.
Why is it worth it?
The RYA Powerboat Level 2 qualifies you to skipper a power-driven vessel up to 10 metres. It is also the certificate you use to apply for your ICC, allowing you to operate internationally in most countries. For many of our students on the River Thames, this is the step that unlocks independent boating and future charter opportunities abroad.
Do I need prior experience?
No experience is required. We regularly train complete beginners, as well as people who have driven boats before but want to formalise their skills. The course is structured so it works at every level. We build progressively, demonstrating first, then coaching you through repetition until your boat handling feels controlled and natural.
What to expect?
This is a highly practical course. We aim to be out on the water as much as possible, putting you at the helm and building real decision-making ability. If conditions are challenging, we have the kit to operate safely year round, and we will use short classroom sessions when appropriate to reinforce knowledge and give you a break from the elements. Training on the Thames means learning in a real working environment, which builds stronger, more transferable skills.
Can I fail?
There is no traditional fail. Very occasionally, if someone needs a little more time to polish a manoeuvre, we agree a simple action plan so you leave feeling confident rather than rushed.
The goal is always the same: safe, capable skippers.
By the end of the course, you will not just hold the certificate. You will understand how to handle a powerboat properly, make sound decisions, and operate with confidence.
Kindest Regards,
Asher Robinson
